Sled Trainer

Dog Sleeding?

I am looking into a career with dogs and I’ve visited a dog sledding tour guide service in Albert Canada and now I’m hooked and want to get a career linked with dog sledding. There isn’t really much info as a career on this type of job but I’m guessing training with a tour guide service would benefit for whatever job I wanted to pick as a dog musher or a trainer for dog sledding. Is there a college course or courses that someone would take to go into these careers or is it mostly apprenticeship? and any websites with more info would also help a lot!

(I know that YA links are wacky - go to www.sleddogcentral.com and click on classifieds you should see the "help/Handlers wanted") You'll be able to find a position that gives room/board and maybe a few bucks an hour take home.

I know of a guy who dropped out of highschool hitchhiked to alaska (from the lower 48!) and got a job as a handler - he now owns his own tour company and cometes in long distance races - he loves what he does!

Animal Nutrition

Basically I'd take pre-vet. You'll want a solid understanding on the health and care of your dogs. I mean they will be your livelyhood!

Also a friend of mine went to the University of Wisconson - they actually had Dog Sleding as a P.E. Credit! That might be an awsome way to see if it's right for you, learn to deal with those cold temps and get your education all at the same time!

There's a lot of options to work with sled dogs. You can own your own equipment buisness, run a tour buisness or even be a guide or trail setter for races.
