Shooting Sleeves

What is the point of a shooting sleeve?

Basketball stars like Melo and Iverson wear a shooting sleeve. Does is serve a purpose?

My friend, who's a basketball coach, says that it really means nothing and has more to do with that player showing some kind of individuality. I don't know what effect it has on your shooting arm. According to this coach, it does nothing but single a player out. It makes it easy for your team members to see you out of the corner of their eye and make passes. He also stated it was a way for players to kinda "show off" and "stand out" in the game. Like I said, I don't know if I agree but some teams do like to have rules about having certain tatoos covered; and teams have certain rules about wearing headbands and or wristbands to limit "showboating" and/or individuality and like to stress the idea of "team".

I'm sure the thumbs will tell everyone's opinion on those theories. LOL
