How can I not lose control when I dribble a basketball?

I was not raised in a basketball family so I had to learn by myself. I can shoot but I still need to work on the fundmentals of dribbling a basketball. I try to learn from other people the way they dribble but I dont know whenever to dribble the ball fast or to dribble slow when I run with the ball. I normally lose control and I will think the ball is in the position it needs to be when it comes up, but then I see the ball behind me.

How can I be better at dribbling?

Also, my older cousin who I visited told me that I shouldnt go to a YMCA because it wont teach you how to be better, Its just a place to get fit, but he is like 30 so dont blame him if he is wrong. I am regestering for basketball at the recreation center in November. But what can I do to get better over the summer?

I'm going to answer this based on how i solved this problem...
i to are from a family that are all into soccer and hate basketball. i alone got interested in it so i start practicing dribbling. i tried almost anything that could help me get better. and i found out that I'm either a very quick learner-which i doubt! or the secret to this is street ball. street ball players have a lot of moves and they have a lot of control. how i became better from gr6-8( i can do almost any move i see and i have by far the best handles in my neighborhood) this is what i did.

1st i tried to put the ball between my legs but this move only is learn t by experience. so... i was about to give up. i went on youtube to give it a last try and searched streetball handles and watched the videos. you can say that i studied all the moves-i practiced all the moves i saw until i mastered every move. by doing this it increased my handles and control because by doing harder things i got the basics mastered quicker. it also helped my shooting because i have better grip of the ball and control. not only did i get better but it was also cool to watch and see new moves!

so mainly go on youtube.com and practice the moves you see streetballer's such as hot sauce tru baller etc do! this will help you get the basics-control- and make u better at dribbling just like it did to me! even the most impossible move you see try to do it. there is no impossible in dribbling. if some1 else can do it, you can! remember that in the mourning of the summer watch streetball vids on youtube and at like 3:00 go outside and practice them(practicing with a mirror in front of you helps you make ur moves more effective!

even though it might seem a dumb idea it worked for me! btw i'm 14
