In what ways can a power surge damage a computer?
I have family who had a bad power surge. Their computer wont turn on. I have a spare PSU, is there a chance I could pop that in and let them back up their files?
If that doesn't work, how can I get their hard drive to boot from my computer? Can I just throw it in and choose to boot from it or will the drivers for the mobo or something be out of whack?
Power surges can be really nasty. That is why there are surge protectors. Power surges can take out a power supply, mobo, RAM, hard drive and processor depending on the severity of the surge.
Your spare PSU may be all that is needed (let's hope so).
You could get their hard drive to work in your working computer by installing it as a slave drive and then access their files, folders, etc. You can not just swap out the hard drives between the computers (unless they are identical computers).
