What does it mean when a power resistor is rated for 40 Amps "permanent"?
Is this the continuous current rating?
In free air, at a given temperature, usually 72 degrees F, the resistor will pass 40 amps of electrical current. There is a differentiation for DC versus AC voltages that have to be taken into consideration. The resistor should be able to handle that current rating without failure for the life time of the component, as stated by the manufacturer in 'x' number of hours. The permanent would mean that the device can not exceed that rating without device failure.
