Larry Bird or Julius Erving. Greatest Small Forward?

Even though Larry Bird was a powerhouse in the '80s leading the Celtics to 3 championship wins (1981, 1984, 1986), as well as win 3 straight League MVPs (1984, 1985, 1986), Julius Erving was terrific as well. Dr. J is fifth all-time in NBA history in points (30,026) behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain. Erving is also one of four of those players with over 10,000 rebounds as well as over 1,000 blocks. Doc was a huge star in the ABA as well with monster numbers averaging 30+ ppg and 10+ rpg during the playoffs with the Nets. With that said, who would you take? Just curious. Dr. J has 3 championships as well (2 w/Nets, 1 w/76ers) as well as 3 MVPs (2 w/Nets, 1 w/76ers).

Larry Bird is the greatest forward who ever played, and also one of the top 3 players in history, period.

Keep in mind that Doc's numbers were much higher in the ABA, where defense was almost non-existant. His numbers dropped drastically when the league's merged. He was a below average shooter outside of 12 feet, with most of his points coming off fast breaks and drives to the hoop.

Bird, on the other hand, was one of the greatest shooters ever, able to score from anywhere on the floor. He was also a better rebounder and the best passing forward of all time. Also, Bird was a much better defender, making all-NBA defense 3 times.

Also, Bird got royally screwed out of that MVP in 1981 (the one that Doc won). This was proven in the ECF that year, when Bird completely dominated Erving on the way to his first title.

You can argue centers or guards, but when it comes to forwards, Bird is clearly ahead of everyone.

Hope this helps
