Most basketball hoops that you find today are made of one of four materials: acrylic, polycarbonate, molded plastic, and glass. A lot of basketball hoop consumers are left confused as to why there are so many to choose from, and which one is really right for them.
Rebound
Rebound is the way that the ball bounces of the backboard. It's really important if you want to make bank shots and other shots "off the glass." Generally the best material for rebound, because of its unsurpassed rigidity, is glass. So if you really want to play like the pros do, its a smart idea to invest in a glass backboard. The next most rigid material is either polycarbonate or acrylic. And the material that offers the least amount of rebound is molded plastic.
If you have a portable basketball hoop want to get a little extra rebound of your unit, you should consider filling the base with sand instead of water, which will help weigh it down a little bit and stabilize it. If you have an in ground basketball goal, try to fill the pool up with concrete, which will make the pole rigid and increase the rebound.
Durability
Durability is how long your basketball goal will last and much abuse it can withstand without getting damaged. All basketball hoop backboards are designed to withstand an extraordinary amount of punishment, such as being hit with a basketball over and over again for years. But some basketball backboard materials definitely stand up better than others. On the low end of the scale you might have molded plastic, which is fine if kids are going to primarily use it, but might crack if used to roughly. And on the higher end you might find heat tempered glass and polycarbonate, both of which are specifically designed for high end rough use, and are built to last a long time.
If you want a good idea of how durable your basketball hoop is, look at how long the warranty lasts (typically five years or more.) The basketball hoop manufacturer is very confident that the basketball backboard will last at least that long.
Coloring over Time
IF you are concerned about the aesthetics of your basketball hoop, then you might want to avoid polycarbonate or acrylic. While they are good materials, they have a tendency to turn a yellow dingy color if left in the sun for a few years. Fortunately, glass doesn't have have this problem (because sun doesn't affect the color of glass) and neither does molded plastic (because it is opaque, and sunlight doesn't pass through it.)
Weight
This one is mostly relevant to wall mounted basketball hoops. If are at all concerned that the material that your wall is made of won't be able to support your basketball hoop for many years, then acrylic is a better way to go over glass, just because it is a bit lighter in weight. However, if you have a good wall to install on and your main concern is performance, glass is a good way to go.
