What are all the lines for on a basketball court?
I understand the 3 point line, the out-of-bounds lines, and the half-court line as far as back court calls go, but what is the actual purpose of the key, the circle at half court, and all those little hash-mark things along the outer line of the free-throw lane and the out-of-bounds lines as well?
everyone's pretty much got it right, except the half-court lines are NOT for show.
normally there are two circles around the half-court line. the smaller, inner one is to designate the area where the two centers will stand for the opening tip. and the larger, outer circle is for the other eight players not to get too close to tip-off.
