As poker players face it off nightly at different gaming tables in Las Vegas, so do the different types of chips that are available on the market these days. From among the different poker chip materials, only two are left standing strong and ready to face each other. These are the ABS composite chip and the Clay Chip. The other material, the plastic chip, is not really in their league. Which one will be declared as the poker player's favorite chip of choice?

The Plastic chip, which at first was believed to have what it takes to be a contender, was dropped out of the running because it did not meet the weight requirements to be categorized as a heavy weight. The plastic poker chip, which was first widely accepted by newbie poker players, has eventually lost its crowd draw. Blame it on its characteristic light weightiness of having only an average of 7.5 to 9.0 grams, players easily realized that the plastic chip is a push over and does not have a professional feel to it. The plastic chip also breaks easily under pressure as the poker games become more serious. People who accepted the plastic chip before soon found out that it cannot be as effective in more serious poker gaming than when it was played at a beginner level.

The ABS Composite Chip and the Clay Chip however, have the fight neck and neck that players are still not sure which one will win in the end. Here is the tale of the tape for both chips:

Costing

In terms of price, ABS Composite Chip is at an advantage for poker players who want to have quality chips at a value for their money while the Clay Chip has captured the hearts of the distinguished players who like to have the authentic feel to their poker playing. A high quality clay chip can cost as much as $3 per chip. In this category, the poker players are divided almost evenly.

Weight

On the heftiness category, both chips scored evenly with each chip having an average weight of 11.5 to 13.5 grams. The ABS Composite chip however needs to have additional metallic inserts in order to match the weight of the Clay Chips.

Durability

When it comes to durability, the ABS Chip, being made from Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene, boasts that it can last a lifetime even with regular use. The Clay Chip, on the other hand, can be scratched more easily than the ABS chip and can even break with extreme abuse. However, the Clay Chip can hold its ground and can give you great poker gaming for about 5 to 7 years. It however needs to be oiled regularly for maintenance.

Design, Feel and Sound

The ABS Composite Chip is always a player-pleaser with its sharp and flashy graphics and designs however it lacks on how it relates to the players in terms of its feel and sound. Players are disappointed with the ABS Chip's metallic clanking whenever it enters a poker game. The ABS Chip is also not as excellent as the Clay Chip when it comes to having that authentic casino feel and sound.

The Verdict

With all aspects of comparison given above, the fight for the favorite poker chip ends with a draw. The ABS Chip won over the more practical, value-for-money seeking poker players. The Clay Chip on the other hand kept its popularity with poker players seeking the authentic poker gaming feel even if they would spend more for it.

When you are playing your home game ensure you get large enough chip set. I would recommend a 500 poker chip set for those playing small tournaments. If your planning to have cash games a bigger set would ensure you never run out, so try out a 1000 poker chip set.
