Ball Inflation
inflated uncooked dough - HELP?

I bought a 1-lb ball of dough at my local supermarket to make pizza with. I've done this before, but this time, the dough self-inflated in the fridge after one day. My mom says this is no good, and I should throw the dough away.

The date on the dough says I can use it until tomorrow.

What causes this inflation in the dough, and is the dough still safe to use?

If you bought yeasted pizza dough, it is supposed to rise (or inflate). That is a good thing - it means the yeast are still alive and your pizza crust will become airy when you bake it. You do not need to throw the dough away unless it has a foul smell to it. If it smells like alcohol or beer, it is fine to use - yeast make alcohol as well as carbon dioxide gas as they consume the sugars in the dough. The gas gets trapped in the gluten in the dough, which causes the dough to rise and expand.
